From Grief to Growth: Amira’s Story of Strength and Community

Amira and her three sisters arrived in Canada carrying more than just luggage—they carried the heavy grief of losing both of their parents at a young age.

With the weight of this loss on her shoulders, Amira stepped into the role of full-time caregiver, dedicating herself to supporting her family while facing the challenge of adapting to an unfamiliar country. Limited English skills and no support network made the journey even more daunting.

The family’s needs were complex: language barriers, navigating healthcare and government services, educational guidance, and additional care for their youngest sister, who deals with accessibility and health challenges. These obstacles could have easily overwhelmed them, but thanks to compassionate support through CCS’s Youth Settlement Program, Amira and her sisters began taking meaningful steps toward stability.

Because of generous donors and dedicated settlement workers, Amira was connected with language classes that helped her improve her English proficiency—a crucial step towards integration. They also gained access to culturally appropriate health and social services in their native language, making sure the family’s unique needs were fully understood and met.

The journey was not without hurdles. Amira balanced caregiving responsibilities with education and social integration, often putting the family’s needs before her own. Yet, participating in community events like Together We Learn: Back to School gave Amira and her sisters not only school supplies but also renewed confidence and meaningful peer connections. These experiences helped transform feelings of isolation into friendships and a growing sense of belonging. Amira shares,

“You have helped me and my sisters so much. I feel confident, happy, and grateful for your support. I believe I can accomplish all of my goals.”

Today, Amira embodies resilience, hope, and determination. With ongoing support from CCS, including programs to build digital skills and connections with other newcomer youth, she is preparing for a future filled with possibility—education, employment, and a stable life in her new home.

Your gift can help more youth like Amira find strength, support, and a fresh start. This holiday season, please consider donating to CCS and be the reason stories like Amira’s are rewritten.
