A Journey from Isolation to Freedom: Amina’s Story
Amina is a 28-year-old newcomer who arrived in Canada in June 2023 with hopes of a safer, more independent life for herself and her young son. Originally from Sudan, with a Peruvian mother and Sudanese father, she had lived for years in a highly controlled environment where she had very little freedom, independence, or privacy.
After arriving in Canada, Amina continued to face similar challenges, feeling isolated and without access to her own financial or personal decisions. She described feeling “trapped and overwhelmed, unsure of where to turn for help”.
In January 2024, Amina reached out to CCS in search of support. With compassionate guidance, she received safety planning, counselling, and clear information about her options. Although she was initially hesitant about entering a shelter, she was supported to make an informed decision that prioritized her safety and well-being.
By the end of January 2024, Amina made the courageous decision to move into a shelter, where she began receiving the support she needed to rebuild her life.
With continued support from community services, legal assistance, and settlement programs, Amina was able to stabilize her situation and move forward with confidence. She began rebuilding her independence, reconnecting with her sense of self, and creating a safer, more hopeful future for herself and her son.
Today, Amina is living a life rooted in safety, dignity, and freedom. She is focused on her healing, her growth, and enjoying meaningful everyday moments with her son.
Her journey is a reminder that with the right support at the right time, it is possible to move from crisis to stability, and from survival to hope.
