Finding Strength and Support: Suraiya and Adina’s Journey

When Suraiya Akter and her daughter Adina arrived in Canada as refugee claimants, they faced a difficult and overwhelming reality. Adina was experiencing severe anxiety and self-harming behaviours, and Suraiya felt isolated and unsure where to turn for help. Seeking urgent support, they came to CCS.

Through CCS, Suraiya and Adina were connected to specialized mental health services with Well Journey Services and Peace Wellness. Suraiya also attended information sessions at CCS’s SIP location, where she learned about wellness resources, community programs, and services for refugee claimants, including Interim Federal Health Program (IFHP) support. The guidance and connections she received helped her navigate documentation, access professional care, and start engaging more confidently in her new community.

Today, Suraiya feels empowered, and Adina is receiving the support she needs to manage her anxiety and heal. Suraiya reflects on their journey:

“I am really thankful for all your support, and the therapy sessions are helping us.”

Their story is a powerful reminder of how compassionate guidance, community connections, and access to mental health resources can help newcomers move from fear and isolation to hope and resilience.
