From Fear to Freedom: A Survivor’s Journey with CCS

Many women live trapped in fear, silence, and control, struggling to find a safe path forward. Elizabeth was one of them. Her every move was watched, and she was never allowed to be alone, even in the washroom where the door had to remain open so her husband could keep an eye on her.

Exhausted and desperate for a moment of privacy, Elizabeth quietly asked for a few minutes alone. That small step was the start of her journey to freedom. When she reached out to Catholic Crosscultural Services (CCS), an Women Support Service team member recognized her situation and spoke with her privately. CCS quickly helped put a safety plan in place for her protection.

Elizabeth was terrified to separate, fearing her husband’s reaction and unsure if freedom was possible. CCS provided clear information about her rights and connected her to legal aid and other support services. Even when her daughters chose to stay with their father, CCS stood beside Elizabeth through this difficult time.

With CCS’s guidance, Elizabeth applied for legal aid and began a family law case. She now has court orders to spend time with her daughters regularly and ongoing support to protect her family’s future.

Safety was always top of mind. At first, Elizabeth hesitated to leave home and stay in a shelter because of stigma and concerns about her job. But with information and encouragement, she made the brave choice to move into safe housing. She stayed with a trusted friend until she secured her own subsidized home.

Now Elizabeth is rebuilding her life. She attends English classes and is preparing to study photography, a dream her husband never supported. She lives free from abuse and hopes for a safer, brighter future for her daughters.

Elizabeth’s story shows that with compassion, clear support, and strength, survivors can reclaim their lives and build hope.
